Ralph Trethewey began sculpting at age ten, encouraged by a father and grandfather who carved. His first efforts were delightful sculptures of birds and animals he enjoyed seeing in the mountains of Utah. Seeing this gift as God given, he gained added satisfaction by giving away most of these early works.

While attending the University of Utah in 1972, he took two sculpture courses from Angelo Caravaglia. Angelo’s affirmation prompted him to refine and develop this art form. Working independently he has developed techniques and styles of sculpture that have been a livelihood for over 30 years.

He has enjoyed a freedom to produce fine art with a balance of sustaining commissions and pursuit of experimental ideas. His works are in select galleries and private collections including those of Hank Williams Jr., former governor of Oregon Barbara Roberts, and “Ripley’s Believe it or Not!”.

Ralph has received numerous awards including “People’s Choice” and “Best of Show.” Commissions have included realistic birds for museums, among them Hawaii’s Volcano’s National Park Visitor Center and Kiluea Point National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Kauai.

His creativity is channeled in three other areas:

  1. Ralph’s overactive sense of humor has found expression in several whimsical sculptures of frogs.
  2. A lifelong interest in antlers is seen in the realistic “World Record Antler Sculptures”, larger than the current Boone & Crockett records for both mule and whitetail deer.
  3. Lately a new interest in astronomy is conveyed in contemporary sculptures of star formation, comets, galaxies and other space entities.
